{"id":21473,"date":"2024-11-01T09:56:18","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T09:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=21473"},"modified":"2024-11-01T10:00:36","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T10:00:36","slug":"the-2024-american-pecans-harvest-begins-in-southern-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/11\/01\/the-2024-american-pecans-harvest-begins-in-southern-states\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2024 American pecans harvest begins in southern states"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The American pecans harvest for the 2024 season began in the southern states on October 20 and will run till late November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the effect of Hurricane Helene, Georgia\u2019s early harvest was yielding robustly at a minimum 42% and a maximum<a href=\"https:\/\/usda.library.cornell.edu\/concern\/publications\/1r66j116v?locale=en\"><u>&nbsp;57%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>meat yield per nut.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shows resilience since Helene wrecked<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/weather\/topstories\/local-pecan-farmers-share-devastating-impacts-from-helene-as-state-agriculture-takes-estimated-6-billion-dollar-hit\/ar-AA1slmpv?ocid=BingNewsVerp\"><u>&nbsp;90%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of pecan trees in eastern Georgia\u2019s counties of Burke and Jefferson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their part, Louisiana and Texas, which also started their 2024 campaign on October 20, had to battle scab disease and heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Texas, production estimates are at between 28 and 32 million pounds, out of a good year capacity of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agrilifetoday.tamu.edu\/2024\/09\/10\/texas-pecan-production-continues-challenging-cycle\/\"><u>50 million pounds<\/u><\/a>. This according to Monte Nesbitt, ph.D., a specialist with Texas A&amp;M Department of Horticultural Sciences in a September report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nesbitt said that Texas has over 80,000 hectares under pecans but is not maximizing production because of such diseases as scab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further north, Oklahoma\u2019s pecan harvest started on October 27, with the state\u2019s farmers reporting low demand and minimal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.selinawamucii.com\/insights\/prices\/united-states-of-america\/pecans\/\"><u>prices<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2024-production-down-11-7-y-0-y\"><strong>&nbsp;2024 Production Down 11.7%, Y-0-Y<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The above low demand will eventually turn around since the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)\u2019s estimates future low supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its only pecan forecast for 2024 on October 11, USDA pushed American pecan in-shell production downward to&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=This%20past%20Friday%2C%20October%2011%2C%202024%2C%20the%20USDA,pounds%20%28inshell%20basis%29%2C%20down%2011.7%25%20from%20last%20year.\"><u>270.9 million pounds.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report does not capture the entire effect of Helene but nevertheless shows that production will be 11.7%<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/12\/12\/u-s-pecan-production-nears-252-million-pounds-in-2023\/\"><u>&nbsp;below that of 2023<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the estimate comes to be the final tally, then the U.S. will have 650.9 million pounds of pecan reserves in 2025. This includes the production estimate of 270.9 million, carry-overs from 2023 at 145 million and Mexican imports at 235 million pounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, this reserve will be almost 20 million pounds below the ending stock of 2023 at 678.99 million pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, despite yielding robustly in certain locations, the 2024 American pecan harvest will be down from that of 2023. Below is a statistical summary of how production has fared in previous years by state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-american-pecans-production-by-state-statistics\"><strong>American Pecans Production by State Statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States had a total utilized production of<a href=\"#:~:text=In%202022%2C%20Georgia%20led%20the%20nation%20in%20pecan,million%20pounds%2C%20and%20Texas%20at%2025%20million%20pounds.\"><u>&nbsp;278,000,000 pounds&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>in pecan nuts in-shell in 2022. However, it still imports from Mexico extra reserves to fill in the gap left by frequent production lows. In the 2022-23 season, the country exported 28% of its pecans, utilized the rest at home and imported&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=This%20past%20Friday%2C%20October%2011%2C%202024%2C%20the%20USDA,pounds%20%28inshell%20basis%29%2C%20down%2011.7%25%20from%20last%20year.\"><u>247,785,000 pounds<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;from Mexico.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do pecans in the U.S. sell shelled or in-shell<\/strong>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 80% of U.S pecans sell in shelled rather than in in-shell condition.
