Australians, who consume\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/870703\/australia-dried-apricot-consumption\/\"><u>thousands of tonnes<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of apricots each year, cherish local fruits from firms such as Aussie Apricots. The company&#8217;s home state of South Australia itself produced the second highest apricot output in the country worth<a href=\"https:\/\/www.horticulture.com.au\/globalassets\/hort-innovation\/australian-horticulture-statistics-handbook\/ahsh-2021-22-fruit.pdf\"> $3.5 million <\/a>in 2022, after Victoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the onset of the Southern Hemisphere spring, we posed a few questions to apricot grower, Kathy Prosser of Aussie Apricots, on what is new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/08\/23\/an-early-spring-for-australias-stone-fruit\/\">, a<u>pricots are already in bloom<\/u><\/a> this year, a boon for early fruit samplers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the normal time when apricots start to bloom as we are coming out of winter and heading into spring,\u201d explains Kathy Prosser.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She adds that due to natural issues, their hallmark fruits only come from South Australia. \u201cWe only source our apricots from SA due to fruit fly issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fruit flies are endemic in mainly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.gov.au\/biosecurity-trade\/pests-diseases-weeds\/fruit-flies-australia\"><u>Northern Territories and Victoria<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;and are a constant threat. They have an affinity to destroy over 300 fruit species, apricots being one of these.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite sourcing from only South Australia for the above reason, Aussie Apricots offers a versatile range of products. Their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aussieapricots.com.au\/\"><u>website<\/u><\/a>\u00a0summarises the whole product range that includes hand-processed \u201cconfectionary, jams &amp; chutneys.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This brings up the question: other than whole unshelled apricots, what does the company offer in terms of unprocessed fruits?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDried Apricots,\u201d Kathy Prosser offers a ready rejoinder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This brings up a pertinent issue. The fact that global consciousness for organic produce has risen in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;century must have seeped into how Aussie Apricots grows its own apricots?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe grow the apricots with minimal sprays like white oil, copper&#8230;\u201d Answers Kathy Prosser.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue that has been on everyone\u2019s lips for the better part of 2023 is inflation and the weather. The December 2022 floods, which affected harvests, were partly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dev.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/05\/03\/el-nino-is-knocking-assessing-potential-impact-on-food-and-agriculture\/\"><u>El Ni\u00f1o<\/u><\/a>-related and had a bearing on the prices of fresh fruits and vegetables in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, how is Aussie Apricots, as a premium producer coping with the wholesale prices for its homegrown apricots?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are coping very well with high demand,\u201d quips Kathy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Finally, as a third-generation family run business, Aussie Fruits must be controlling&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a particular market niche?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she expounds, \u201cwe are selling to the public as demand is high.
