areca nut
About this areca nut
Dry areca nut is the dried seed of the fruit of the
Areca catechu palm tree, also known as betel nut. After harvesting, the nuts are processed by boiling and then sun-drying for several days to achieve a hard, dry texture. Dry areca nut is available in various forms, including whole, split, or sliced.
Important health notice: Chewing areca nut is associated with serious health risks, including oral submucous fibrosis (a precancerous condition), addiction, and increased risk of oral, pharynx, and esophageal cancers. The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies betel quid—of which areca nut is a primary ingredient—as a Group 1 carcinogen.
Common varieties of dry areca nut
Different regions cultivate varieties of areca nut with distinct characteristics, which affect their final dried form. Some examples include:
White areca nut: A variety that is sun-dried without boiling, resulting in a whiter color.
Red areca nut: A variety that is boiled before being dried, often giving it a reddish hue.
Karunka: A variety from Sri Lanka that typically has a final dried weight of 4.8g after drying, according to Sri Lanka's Department of Export Agriculture.
